Tips for PIO Injections

I started the Progesterone in Oil (PIO) injections on Saturday night. They aren't as bad as I thought they would be. Mike was pretty worried about sticking me with a needle, but I think that he now secretly enjoys it! ;) I wanted to share tips that I have received from other IVFers and Bloggers with others that are either about to go through IVF or may see it in their future.

Supplies: alcohol wipe, PIO, bigger needle (to extract the PIO out of vial),
smaller needle (to inject PIO intramuscular), and a spot bandage (there will
be a little bleeding)
We were told to put the PIO in hot water to thin the oil and so it doesn't
crystallize while going in. We use a Dixie cup and keep it in the hot water
while extracting the PIO from the vial.
Ice the area for a minute or two to numb the area! If you are unsure of where
the needle goes, ask your nurse to mark you with a Sharpie marker like I did!
She told me it is between the back corner of the front pockets of my jeans
to the outside seam of back pockets.
Massage with a hot wash cloth to help the oil move around and to help prevent
bad knots.
Sit on a heating pad afterwards. I've been sitting on one for about an hour
each night.

I'm so excited for you guys! I didn't have to do the injections, but you make it look easy! I had the suppositories which were, in a word, disgusting.

I'm going to have to try the ice cube. I just started my PIO injections this past Friday and I've been walking around with a sore butt. Thanks and good luck!

Awesome tips. PIO can be quite annoying. I myself have those bad knots and they hurt like no other.
